How Does Ludicrous Mode Work?

There’s a lot of talk about the Tesla Model S P100D and Ludicrous Mode. For those who have been following Tesla performance, Ludicrous Mode replaced Insane Mode. Here’s how it works:

The Tesla Model S P100D features dual all-wheel-drive electric motors, one for the front axle and one for the rear axle.

Ludicrous mode starts in the Tesla’s batteries, which output direct current. An inverter converts the direct current to alternating current to run the dual electric motors.

There is a direct correlation between the amps that these motors input and the torque that these motors output to make the Tesla Model S P100D a 21st Century muscle car. Under normal circumstances, these motors are fed 1,300 amps of alternating current. That translates into a swift 0-60 mph of 4.1 seconds.

In Ludicrous mode, the Tesla P100D raises the temperature of its battery pack to 122-degrees Fahrenheit and increases maximum power output from the motors.
